Sam Fisher was a member of the Palouse Tribe, a smaller part of the Nez Perce Tribe, located in Washington along the Snake River.

A little story :
"Many of the horses were left at the
Nez Perce homeland and some escaped or were abandoned along the roung
trail through the rugged Bear Paw and Rocky Mountains. The horse
Joseph took with him were turned over to the army. We have accounts
of mass slaughter of some of these fine animals by the army in their
attempt to destroy the horses that had helped Joseph and his people
in their flight. The remaining horses were driven to the army fort in
Yellowstone area of northwestern Wyoming, to be dispersed. This marks
another era in the story of the Appaloosa Horse.
With the Nez Perce now forced onto reservations, their land was
opened up to settlers. This rich farmland brought people from
the East, eager to move into new country. The Nez perce horses that
remained on the original Indian land were rounded up. Most of
them were crossed with cold-blooded draft stock, in order to produce
the heavy workhorses to plow the Idaho farmland. Few people needed
riding horses and only a minority realized the good qualities of the
Nez Perce horses for riding or kept them purebred.
The only remaining breeders of the pure undiluted Nez Perce horses
were the tribes of Palouse Indians, which were to the north in the
state of Washington. They had declined to participate in the
indian wars and their life-style and herds of horses remained much
the same as they had for over a century."
